Heartbreak Hotel transforms Fort Scammel from a monument of defense into a sanctuary for emotional repair. Set on House Island near Portland, Maine, the project reimagines the lonely, unfinished military fort as a temporary place of refuge for those recovering from heartbreak. By deconstructing and reconstructing the fort’s existing elements, the proposal turns materials of conflict into spaces of comfort, care, and reorientation. Rather than overcoming the past, the project reconciles with it, allowing failure, isolation, and not-becoming to become the foundation for healing.
